+ Lead Scientist

Hamburg, Germany

Mushlabs is a biotech startup using fermentation to create the next generation of sustainable foods from the roots of mushrooms. We grow fungal mycelium to create nutritious and delicious raw ingredients that form the basis of meat substitute products. Our mission is to produce nutritious and sustainable foods that appeal to both vegetarians and meat-eaters. We envision a food system that produces accessible nutrition for the growing population while preserving our planet.

We are looking for a Lead Scientist to help us unleash the full potential of fungal mycelium as a food source and turn it into one of the best-tasting food products on the market. As Lead Scientist, you will help coordinate our research team towards the successful development and optimization of our current and future production processes.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Design experiments to improve growth and product nutritional profile
  • Plan and execute fermentation trials at lab and pilot scale
  • Perform medium and strain screening at lab scale
  • Develop and improve relevant analytical methods
  • Make recommendations with regards to project requirements
  • Report results directly to the Chief Science Officer
  • Supervise students and research scientist in the lab
  • Write scientific reports to keep track of progress
  • Generate new scientific ideas

Qualifications

  • PhD in biotechnology/biology/biochemistry/biochemical engineering or equivalent
  • Founded experience in lab work, biocatalysis and fermentation technology
  • Excellent knowledge of cell metabolism
  • Working knowledge of fungal biology
  • Sound knowledge of enzyme characterization and optimization
  • Proven track record of project and team management
  • Knowledge of routine analytics: HPLC, UV-Vis, GC-MS, LC-MS, cell count etc.
  • Proven ability to interpret scientific data
  • Innate interest for understanding and solving complex matters
  • Commitment to building a technology from the ground up
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and challenging environment
  • Interest in working in an international environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent written and verbal skills in English

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience with filamentous fungi
  • Knowledge and experience in process engineering
  • German language skills
  • Strong background in statistical methods and experience in statistical analyses

+ Research Scientist

Hamburg, Germany

We are looking for a Research Scientist to support our team in Hamburg and help bringing the next-gen innovative food products to the market. As a Research Scientist, your role will be to assist our Lead Scientist in the lab and execute key experiments to improve our process and products.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Prepare media and fermenters for experiments
  • Run fermentation trials with the Lead Scientist
  • Execute fermentation trials at lab and pilot scale
  • Perform medium, enzyme and strain screening at lab scale
  • Analyze results and discuss them with the Lead Scientist
  • Prepare samples for analysis with HPLC, UV-Vis, GC-MS…
  • Take on responsibilities in lab organization (orders, commissioning, maintenance etc.)
  • Write SOPs and scientific reports to consolidate internal know-how

Qualifications

  • Masters in biotechnology/biology/biochemistry/biochemical engineering or equivalent
  • Founded experience in lab work, biocatalysis and fermentation technology
  • Experience in enzyme characterization and optimization
  • Knowledge of routine analytics: HPLC, UV-Vis, GC-MS, LC-MS, cell count...
  • Enthusiasm for supporting project progress through excellent hands-on work
  • Excellent organizational and teamwork skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and challenging environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent written and verbal skills - Proficient in English and German

We are looking for a Business Development Analyst with a strong understanding of the food and restaurant industries and a passion for bringing about a sustainable change to the way we eat.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate the market, target customer group, competition and trend-data
  • Evaluate distribution channels and identify niche opportunities for a successful product placement
  • Assist in the development and the supply chain of our product
  • Setup brand promotion activities and implement marketing strategies to open market
  • Provide support to the management team (CEO, COO)
  • Assist in preparation of budgets
  • Train interns and new hires

Your profile

  • Master’s degree in business management or a related field
  • Proficient in data analytics (Excel, VBA)
  • Detail-oriented, independent and creative
  • Able to juggle multiple tasks and thrives in fast-paced learning environment
  • Strong communication skills (Written and Oral) in German and English

  • Previous experience and strong understanding of financial strategy and modelling

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate the market, target customer group, competition and trend-data
  • Assist in business development activities
  • Support in social media marketing and content strategy
  • Work closely with the management team (CEO, COO)

Your profile

  • Available for at least 3 months starting October 2019
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or a master’s degree in business management or a related field
  • Proficient in data entry and spreadsheets (Excel, VBA)
  • Detail-oriented, independent and creative
